San Antonio-based ensemble Viatorum will bring its “Leap” program to Southwestern University in Georgetown on Sunday, September 20.
The Sarofim Music Series concert starts at 2pm on the Davidson Stage at Alma Thomas Theater. It is open to the public, but a ticket is required.
Southwestern describes the program as a musical exploration of movement, risk and discovery, combining new work and interpretations shaped by traditions from the United States and the Mediterranean.
Who is performing?
Viatorum was formed in 2019 and brings together musicians with experience across Middle Eastern, Iberian, Balkan, Turkish and Western musical traditions. Its core members are Berk Agar on guitar, Andrew Bergmann on bass, Rami El-Farrah on saxophones and Ethan Wickman on oud.
For the Georgetown program, percussionist Dustin Schulze is due to appear as a guest. The combination of oud, guitar, saxophone, bass and percussion gives the group a broader palette than a conventional chamber ensemble.
The university says the repertoire includes original work and music informed by the members' different areas of study. Audience members should expect a concert built around rhythmic and cross-cultural connections rather than a single national or classical style.
