Georgetown Independent School District voters will decide Proposition A on Tuesday, November 3, a tax-rate election intended to raise operating revenue for staff pay, student programs and the district budget.

The district proposes a total 2026-27 tax rate of $1.1106 per $100 of taxable value. That is six cents above the rate that would otherwise apply, combining a nine-cent increase in the maintenance and operations portion with a three-cent reduction in the interest and sinking portion.

If voters reject the measure, GISD says the rate would return to $1.0506. The proposal is a voter-approval tax rate election, not a bond: it would fund recurring operations rather than authorize a fixed amount of construction debt.

Revenue and staff pay

The ballot language states that the rate would produce $17,479,755 more maintenance and operations revenue than the preceding year, a 12.8% increase. GISD says state recapture means it expects to retain approximately $8.4 million annually.

The district proposes using that retained amount for 3.5% to 4% teacher pay increases, with a stated minimum increase of $2,300, and a 3% increase for other staff. It also says approval would help protect programs and a balanced budget.

If Proposition A fails, GISD says it would consider larger classes, staff reductions, changes to student programs and further campus or department cuts if it still sought compensation increases. These are stated possibilities, not decisions already taken.

Estimated household effect

For GISD's cited 2026 median taxable home value of $444,465, the district estimates an annual school tax bill of $3,381 if the measure passes. It compares that with last year's median home and estimates a difference of $7.97 a year, or 66 cents a month.

An individual bill depends on taxable value, exemptions and any tax freeze. GISD says qualifying homeowners aged 65 or over would not see school taxes rise above their frozen amount, while homesteads appraised at $140,000 or less do not pay district property tax under the stated exemption.

Voting dates

The registration deadline is October 5, early voting runs October 19–30 and election day is November 3. Eligible voters must live within GISD and be registered; the school measure will appear alongside other contests.
